Regatta Report - Wolcott

On Sunday June 28, we had near record temperatures, and a forecast that was promising for the wind to die out.  Seven Hampton One Designs, 7 Laser Radials, 2 420s, and 9 Optimists pushed off in a 7knot breeze.  As they got further out, the wind was doing exactly what was promising; shutting off.  The race committees got the inside and outside courses set, and the first race started in about 5-7 knots.  As the race continued the wind increased to about 10 knots; and then to 12.  By the end of the day everyone was sailing back to shore in 13-15 knots of breeze.  The Hampton One Designs had a very close regatta with a 3 way tie for first place.  Gordon WOlcott and Woody Granger (NYCC) came out on top winning the tiebreaker.  Father and son team Billy and Bill VanBuren (NYCC) (son Billy was driving) came in second, and Gordon's father and sister, Eddie and Sarah (NYCC) rounded out the top three.  On the Radial course, there was some close racing with 4 out of the 7 winning at least one race, and 5 out of the seven finishing in the top three in at least one race.  It was Alex Jacob who came out on top, with Ben Buhl and Jeremy Herrin rounding out the top 3.  Jake Spracher and Crew Abby Smith (HYC) won every race in the 420 fleet with Tony and sister, Demetra (NYCC), finishing 2nd.  In the Opti fleet Alexander Hanna (HYC) won the regatta with consistency.  With only one first, and 5 second places, he finished one point ahead of Kendall Swenson (FBYC) who came back strong in the last three races winning them all.  Will Whitmore (NYCC) was only 2 points behind Kendall finishing in third place.  We had two green fleet sailors, Jack Whitmore, and Graham Webb who had a great time racing and are ready to go to Hampton YC on July 3-4.
