Hampton YC hosts "Icebreaker" Regatta

posted Mar 10, 2025 3:08 PM by David Houck

The Hampton Yacht Club hosted their first March clinic/regatta on March 6-7 for Optis and Laser Radials. Coaches David Tunnicliffe and John Shockey respectively led their Opti and Radial teams with an intense coaching session on Saturday and a regatta on Sunday. In spite of a real winter in Virginia this year and a snow storm with 30kts of breeze only 4 days before the event, the weather finally cooperated with perfect wind conditions and almost 60 deg F temperatures.

The clinic was conducted in 10 to 15 kts of breeze with a series of drills, starts, boat speed and boat handling exercises, followed by a classroom session. The regatta took place on Sunday with 5 races conducted in 2 to 10 kts of breeze. The winds were blowing from the north at the start of the day that backed to the south west at the end of the first race when 6 to 10 kts solidly filled in giving perfect sailing conditions. Sailors were faced with the challenging conditions of shifting winds of varying pressure with medium length courses. Alexander Hanna (HYC) dominated the Opti class winning every race with Graeme Alderman (FBYC) second and Will Whitmore (NYCC) third. In the Laser Radial class Ben Buhl (FBYC) finished in first place with Jeremy Herrin (FBYC) second and Jake Spracher (HYC) third.

A special thanks goes to coaches David Tunnicliffe and John Shockey who made the event possible.
